Sophia Smith China Doll
This is a 24 inch tall china head doll on a cloth and leather body with Kinsbach hands.  Her hairstyle is known as Sophia
Smith.  It is comprised of equal length sausage curls all around the head.  This head has characteristics of the Kestner
factory including the small mouth, line between the lips, highlight in the eyes and partial outline around the iris.  Her costume
is period natural silk with silk covered buttons.
Kinsbach hands are hands, as opposed to the whole foreaem, made of china.
Sophia Smith (1796-1870) endowed a women's college with her fortune upon her death.  Initially, she intended to fund a
school for the deaf as she was deaf by the age of 40.  However, in 1868 a school for the deaf opened in her area and she
shifted the benefit of her fortune to endow a woman's college, Smith College in Massachusetts.
