1870-1890 Joel Ellis
This doll was created in the 1870s at the Cooperative Manufacturing Company in Springfield Vermont.  Joel Ellis, president of
the company, held the patent for the mortise and tenon joints body design.  Note how the shoulder joint is now outside the torso
in contrast to the German peg wooden dolls where the shoulder joint is inside the torso.  The doll is made of rock maple with a
lathe turned body and pressed and molded head.  Because of the pressure in making the heads, the painting frequently
chipped off of these dolls.  Most dolls of this manufacturer have either lost most or all of their face paint or have been repainted
as this one has.  The dress is an original Springfield Vermont doll dress but not original to this doll.
