Martha Wellington
Martha Wellington of Brookline Mass. obtained US Patent #285,448 on September 25, 1883 though a patent mark on a known
doll states Jan 8 1883.  Her patent focused upon improvements supporting the facial structure of cloth dolls including the eyes
and brows, nose, mouth and chin and extending down into the body.  The support was covered with flesh colored stockinette
and stuffed with cotton.  The frame and stockinette were stitched together through the stuffing to create needle sculpted
features.  The ears were applied separately.  The dolls were approximately 23-24 inches tall.  The face, arms and legs were oil
painted.  Hands included more realistic curved fingers and a separately applied thumb.  The buttocks was very rounded.
