Wood had decreased in popularity as a form for dolls in Europe with the rise in the porcelain manufacturers in the late 1800s.  
Unlike the industrialized Europe, China was still making dolls of wood and cloth, notable among these are the dolls from the
Door of Hope Mission.  America was still developing its industrial centers and still relied heavily on natural materials such as
wood to make toys including dolls.  This was particularly notable in a firm developed by the German immigrant Albert
Schoenhut.
