WPA Dolls
The Depression of the 1930s devastated artists as well as businesses. President Roosevelt administration created the federal
Works Progress Administration (WPA). This program was developed to create work for unemployed artisans and craftsmen.
Artists were paid by the administration to create and teach others to make handcrafted products. Many states participated and
each state's artisans created signature items, including many dolls. The dolls are unique to the states and its artists and
therefore are widely varied.
